Besotted Review

OK
This exceptionally strange romantic drama masquerades as a supernatural comedy, but at heart it's another hyper-realistic story of mature romance (as opposed to the usual teen rom-com). Director Holly Hardman plays a witch of sorts who gets tapped to aid in a case of unrequited love that local town drunk Shep (Jim Chiros) has for lady lobster fisher and ex-lover Vicky (Susan Gibney). Hardman moves statuettes around a magic chessboard of sorts for 90 minutes, with unpredictable, yet not terribly compelling results. Strangely, the DVD case describes this as "an illuminating experiment with the creative process," but there's nothing experimental on the screen. Besotted comes across as just another indie romantic drama that didn't really go anywhere. (If something kooky is happening behind the scenes -- like they shot the movie without a script or something -- I'm clueless about it.)

Simpatico Review

Weak
I love a good thriller. And no one makes good thrillers any more. Enter Simpatico, with a cast boasting both Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges, not to mention Albert Finney and Sharon Stone -- all set among the intrigue of a scandal involving horse racing, blackmail, and steamy sex. How could this miss?

By being as straightforward as, well, a horse race. It's just a big loop from start to finish. No real surprises along the way, just jockeying for position. Simpatico finishes right where it started, with a time of 106 minutes.

Second Skin Review

Terrible
Angus MacFadyen stars in Braveheart. Peter Fonda gets an Oscar nod for Ulee's Gold. And as an encore, they both star in Second Skin, a direct-to-video mess about an amnesiac hit-woman and, as the case says, "a series of suspenseful twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end."

Sure, I was guessing. Guessing that nothing good was ever going to happen.
