Maguire opened up to the magazine about his career and The Great Gatsby.
You know how Tobey Maguire always plays the quiet, unassuming guy? The Great Gatsby, even if it was a great decision for Maguire’s career, only seems to have reaffirmed the stereotype. But recently, the actor has been stepping out of the shadow of bigger fish in Hollywood (cough, Leonardo Dicaprio, cough) to carve his own distinct path. Apparently, said path now includes a sort-of gangster image and knuckle dusters that spell out “CALI”. You know, because you always want to engrave your opponent’s face with your place of birth.
We are, of course, talking about Maguire’s recent, post-Gatsby shoot for German magazine Interview. Apart from the crisp white suit, it isn’t entirely clear how the shots are channeling the Gatsby theme, but they sure are funny. One of the snaps shows Maguire’s face superimposed on a bodybuilder’s body, while the cover shows him in the aforementioned white suit, sporting giant, Mickey Mouse-esque hands, The Daily Mail reports. It’s meant to be hilarious, apparently.
It's been a long time since Maguire's Spiderman and things have definitely changed.
The interview is pretty much what you would expect – Maguire talks about his career, the challenge of taking on F Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic work and, of course, Gatsby’s overnight success at the box office. It’s pretty interesting stuff, if you’re a hardcore fan of the film or the actor. Even if you’re not however, for those of you with access to the German magazine, it might be worth picking up for the photos alone.
