It's been almost ten months since the finale of season 3 so, if you're in need of a refresher course in the where each Girls character was up to and what season 4 promises for them, here's a quick rundown:

Hannah

In the season 3 finale, Hannah (Lena Dunham) was torn between staying in New York with Adam (Adam Driver) or leaving the city to attend a prestigious writing course at the University of Iowa. Things had been a little shaky between her and Adam as he attempted to balance his life as a Broadway actor and maintain a relationship. We know from the season 4 trailer that Hannah has decided to flee New York and head to Iowa but things seem to be running smoothly, or as smoothly as they can for Hannah, in her long distance relationship with Adam.

Marnie

Marnie's (Allison Williams) musical career, after the disastrous video her ex-boyfriend Charlie shared online, was finally picking up in season 3. With the help of Adam's Broadway co-star Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Marnie's confidence had picked up and the two performed a duet. There was an immediate attraction between the two but, much to Marnie's disappointment, Desi was in a relationship. In the finale, Marnie and Desi kiss but she soon realises the repercussions she's made on his relationship. In season 4, Marnie seems to be faced with collaborating with Desi and managing her feelings towards him whilst he's still in a relationship.

Shosh

Shosh (Zosia Mamet) is not doing well. Despite manically working at university for the first two seasons, she went off the rails in season 3 and did not graduate from college. Romantically things are not looking up either as Marnie revealed she had slept with Ray (Alex Karpovsky) after he and Shosh had split up. Shosh, furious at her friend but missing Ray, begs for him to take her back but Ray refuses. In the season 4 trailer, things seem to be improving as Shosh is looking for a job. Unfortunately, she's finding it remarkably difficult and is turning on her friends (and cousin Jessa) for not warning her of the stress of reality.

Jessa

Jessa (Jemima Kirke) was in serious trouble, to make a change, at the end of season 3 when she helped her employer Bedelia take a fatal drug overdose. Bedelia changed her mind soon after taking the drugs and Jessa was forced to call an ambulance. We're not certain if Bedelia lives as it appeared to be a race for time which certainly created a startling cliff-hanger in the season finale. Aside from Jessa dealing with her cousin Shosh's inability to accept reality, Jessa faces arrest at some point in season 4 but for what we don't know as yet.

Girls Season 4 premieres Sunday, January 11 at 9pm on HBO.
