It looks like we'll finally get a chance to re-live a particularly special part of our childhoods as it is announced that a sequel to 1996's basketball flick 'Space Jam' is well on the way - and, as a bonus, it's rumoured that Lebron James will take over from Michael Jordan as the new movie's main star.

LeBron JamesLeBron James to return to the big screen?

LeBron James made his acting debut last year in Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow's 'Trainwreck', so it's not completely unlikely for the Cleveland Cavaliers star to pick up another major comedy. 'Despite a report LeBron will star in 'Space Jam 2', no deal is in place sources say', he told his followers on Twitter. 'Maybe at some point but not as of yet.'

'Fast & Furious' director Justin Lin is attached to helm the movie with screenwriters Andrew Dodge ('Bad Words') and Alfredo Botello joining him on the script. Willie Ebersol is also attached to the screenplay. Lin has got a lot of projects in line, many of which are as of yet untitled, with his next release being 'Star Trek Beyond'. He is also attached to another Bourne sequel starring Jeremy Renner and a re-make of 'Small Soldiers' which has a working title of 'Toymageddon'.

The original 'Space Jam' movie directed by Joe Pytka was released in 1996 and teamed Michael Jordan with the cast of Looney Tunes. It saw the cartoon heroes enlist the basketball superstar to help them avoid capture by the alien proprieters of an intergalactic theme park. While it had mixed reviews, it was quite the commercial hit with having earned $230.4 million worldwide.

'Space Jam 2' is thought to be hitting movie theaters in 2017.
