Lauryn Hill completed her three month stay in prison for tax evasion earlier this week, and rather than spend her time behind bars twiddling her thumbs and staring at the wall, the former Fugees star was busy writing her newest single. 'Consumerism' isn't so much a celebration of her freedom, but rather - as the title suggests - a rallying call against the evils of capitalism and a consumerist lifestyle. You can stream the song below.

The song is a scathing attack on modern society

The socially-minded singer/rapper targets "corporate greed in Jesus’ name," as well as bemoaning the ills of ageism, sexism, racism, fascism, egoism and more, outlining the evils of "compromised commercialism" and "neo-McCarthyism." The track was accompanied by an open letter from Hill, both of which were posted on to her SoundCloud page this week, in which she described her thought process behind the song and how she had initially planned to have it released while she was in prison.

She wrote, "Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level."

The release comes after Hill completed a three month stay at a minium security facility for tax evasion, in a case where she was convicted of failing to file tax returns on over $2 million in earnings between 2005 - 2007. It has recently been reported that she has signed a deal with Sony Records and has already begun working on a new album. More word on any potential new releases when they emerge.
