Laura Linney is set to star in the new Showtime series, The Big C.
Linney, star of The Squid and The Whale, and Mystic River, will play a shy suburban wife and mother who is diagnosed with cancer. The illness forces her to change her life, and find the positives whilst also keeping her immature husband in check, played by Oliver Platt. Gabourey Sidibe will also appear in the drama, as a young, intelligent, student.
Linney was pleased to hear that whilst filming The Big C, advances were made in cancer research, especially in the study of melanoma which her character is diagnosed with - she told the San Francisco Examiner, "Oddly, sort of weirdly, we started the show, and then this enormous research came out about a new treatment for melanoma. So, I don't know what's going to happen, and we'll see. But I find the fullness of the time that Cathy has so wonderful. As long as (the show) is honest, I'm sort of game for whatever happens." Throughout her career, Linney's performances have won her three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and three ACADEMY AWARD nominations.
The Big C premieres in the US, on SHOWTIME, on Monday 16th August 2010.
