Lady GaGa refused to bow to pressure from her pop peers to cancel her concert in Arizona on Saturday (31Jul10) - instead using the gig to urge fans to protest the state's controversial new immigration laws.
The Poker Face hitmaker admits she received a slew of phone calls from her fellow artists, begging her to join their high-profile campaign against the legislation, known as SB 1070, which gives police the power to arrest anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant.
Gaga refused to scrap her gig in Phoenix and called on her loyal followers to take a stand against the controversial bill.
During the show, she said, "I got a call from some big rappers and big rockers. They said, 'We'd like you to boycott Arizona because of SB 1070'.
"I told them, 'Do you really think that... pop stars are going to shut down the state?' You really think us dumb f**king pop stars are gonna collapse the economy in Arizona? I'll tell you what we have to do about SB 1070. We have to be active. We have to actively protest.
"I will not cancel my show. I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will protest this state. Do not be afraid. Because if it wasn't for all of you immigrants, this country wouldn't have s**t. And I mean it. I mean it so deeply in my soul."
A number of high profile acts including Rage Against The MAChine, Kanye West and Maroon 5 have announced a boycott of Arizona over the new laws.
