A battered tour van used by cult rock band the Melvins and featuring a mural by Kurt Cobain has recently been sold on eBay for a generous $24,701.
The van, dubbed 'Melvan', was auctioned as a 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal and was used by the Melvins on their first US tour with the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain working as their roadie before Nirvana became huge. On the side of the brown and white vehicle is a mural featuring drawings of the Kiss band members, apparently the artwork of Cobain. Although the paintwork is chipped and the van is rusted in parts, not to mention possessing an unimpressive interior, the eBay seller insisted the Melvan, which was sold on Tuesday (August 28th 2012) was 'a one of a kind piece of grunge rock history' though admitted that it 'could use a new set of tires and a brake job'. It has also got a 'brand new starter and fuel pump', though one suspects that these additions did little to contribute to the main appeal of the van.
The Melvins formed in 1983 and are still going strong today. Their slow tempos and gritty sound were a big influence on the Seattle grunge scene inspiring bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Green River. Their last album release was 'Freak Puke' in June this year which served as their eighteenth effort to date.
