With the crowd-funded Veronica Mars movie heading to cinemas in the very near future, there is a fever surrounding the amateur detective not seen since the show first debuted back in 2004. In an effort to cash in on this renewed interest in the show, a spin-off web series has been commission by The CW, to be aired on their digital platform CW Seed.

All we know so far is that Veronica Mars is getting a spin-off, with further details on the exciting prospect being held under-wraps for now. The CW president Mark Pedowitz has spoken briefly about the confirmed project, but only to say that he has discussed the spin-off with series creator Rob Thomas, who will be spear heading the show's move from the small screen, to the big screen and then to the slightly smaller screen.

Thomas had previously stated on his Twitter account that the show will be an untraditional spin-off and will likely consist of 10 minute segments featuring VM star Ryan Hansen playing a version of himself trying to put together a Dick Casablancas-based spin-off of Veronica Mars.

"Rob and I spoke last night," Pedowitz told The Hollywood Reporter. "He's very excited about doing this for CW Seed. It may not appear before the film comes out."

Whilst the spin-off series is put together, the final touches will also be added to the highly-anticipated Veronica Mars movie, which will premiere at the South By Southwest festival this March, ahead of its limited release on 14 March. In addition to the film and web spin-off, Thomas is also working on a Veronica Mars book series, which will be released some time in 2014 through Vintage Books.
