German electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk once employed an engineer who used to slash the cables pumping 'muzak' into elevators.

The AUTOBAHN hitmakers despised the sound of airy pseudoclassical renditions of popular classics and so took an engineer on tour with them who would rip out cables to stop the lift music.

Kraftwerk bandmate RALF HUTTER explains, "One of the computer engineers who worked with us on the sequencers was a specialist in identifying where these cables are. It was funny.

"We want to listen to the elevator. It's more interesting to listen to the sound of the elevator... than to some muzak, which is sound pollution."
