No 'Respect' For Aretha Franklin At 'Essence Music Festival'

Aretha Franklin Chaka Khan Kirk Franklin Fantasia Barrino Anthony Hamilton

The Essence Music Festival 2012 made a soulful finale in New Orleans on Sunday (July 8th 2012) during the three day event. Preceding music royalty the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Queen of Funk Chaka Khan were spectacular performances from contemporary gospel singer Kirk Franklin, 2004 'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino and Grammy winning soul star Anthony Hamilton.

Kirk Franklin received immense support during his energetic set with hits such as 'I Smile' and 'Imagine Me' being sung back by the audience. He complained a few times about his hour set being shortened to 30 minutes; a feeling that was shared by fans particularly when he began to play a selection of song snippets on a keyboard. Hamilton equally never failed to impress festival goers. Armed with a tambourine and one hell of a vocal range, he raised the roof with his 'Prayin' For You'.

Joyful Noise Review

Weak
Life-affirming to the point of distraction, this comedy is so warm and cosy that it never even approaches believability. If only writer-director Graff had injected the film with half as much earthy energy as he puts into the terrific musical numbers. And let the cast out of the box.

At a down-home church in Pacashau, Georgia, GG (Parton) is peeved when she's not offered the job after her choir-director father (a brief Kris Kristofferson cameo) dies. The new leader is her rival Vi Rose (Latifah), who plans to win the upcoming regional competition with pure gospel. To further stir things up, GG's bad-boy grandson Randy (Jordan) is back in town, and he's smitten with Vi Rose's 16-year-old daughter Olivia (Palmer).

In the small Georgian town of Pacashau, Divinity Church Choir singer Vi Rose Hill (Queen Latifah) is made choir director over the feisty GG Sparrow (Dolly Parton). Their ever-increasing conflict threatens to weaken the strength of the choir's talent as they compete for the National Joyful Noise Competition. Vi wants to stick to what is traditional in the gospel choir whereas GG wants to shake up their sound and make it more appealing to the rest of the town.

Femme Fatale - Britney Spears Femme Fatale Storms Billboard Chart

Britney Spears Madonna Barbra Streisand Wiz Khalifa Radiohead Snoop Dogg Mary Mary Adele Chris Brown Jennifer Hudson Kirk Franklin The Strokes

Britney Spears' seventh studio album 'Femme Fatale' has stormed to the top of the Billboard 200 chart thanks to first week sales of 276,000, reports MTV News. 'Femme Fatale' has been regarded as a return to form for Britney and the album has been garnering the best reviews of her career.

Femme Fatale's position at the top of the charts means Britney Spears is now third on the list of most number-one records by a female artist. Only Madonna and Barbra Streisand have registered more chart topping albums, with nine. Although 'Femme Fatale' has only sold half of the 505,000 that the singer recorded with her 2008 album 'Circus', it was still enough to hold off Wiz Khalifa's 'Rolling Papers', which sold 197,000 to take second place. Among the other debuts in this week's top 10 are Radiohead's 'King Of Limbs', Snoop Dogg's 'Doggumentary' and Mary Mary's 'Something Big'. Making up the rest of the top ten is British singer-songwriter Adele, controversial R&B star Chris Brown, soul singer Jennifer Hudson and Kirk Franklin. After debuting at number four last week, indie band The Strokes have dropped to number 18.

Britney Spears recently announced a tour of the U.S. and Canada which will kick off in Sacramento on 17th June 2011. After passing through the likes of Portland, Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, Washington and Boston, the tour will wind up at the Toronto Air Canada Centre on 13th August 2011.
