Movie veteran Kirk Douglas was the first ever recipient of a brand new lifetime achievement award yesterday (31JUL06) - and the gong was named after himself. The 89-year-old star was presented the Kirk Douglas Award For Career Achievements in Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in California, and he posed with the trophy in front of a giant picture of himself in his 1950s heyday. He said, "Movie gongs go to people who can take you out of your daily life for a few hours."
