Séance On A Wet Afternoon Review

Good
Here's a good scam: Woman, trying to prove her ability as a psychic, kidnaps the child of a wealthy couple so she can use "her powers" to later find the child. She's not really in it for the money, alas. She's a raving lunatic.

Kim Stanley earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a woman on the edge -- reminiscent of Angela Lansbury's turn in The Manchurian Candidate -- but it's Richard Attenborough who steals the show as her husband, who goes along with the affair but is torn between pleasing his wife and doing the right thing.

The Right Stuff Review

Extraordinary
Fortuitous time for The Right Stuff to hit DVD, when the American space program is nearing rock bottom in the court of public opinion.

Based on Tom Wolfe's novel (though heavily inspired by the truth), The Right Stuff follows the formative years of the space race, from 1947 to 1963, when it was us vs. the Russians. The film begins as we first punch through Mach 1 in experimental aircraft and ends with seventh and final Mercury astronaut blasting off.

Frances Review

Good
This fairly engaging (if over-long) biopic of infamous 1930s actress Frances Farmer is a showpiece for Jessica Lange, who I normally am not a big fan of. Unfortunately though the story glosses over some of the big details in Farmer's life. While we get her incarceration in a mental asylum and lobotomization, her various celebrity weddings barely get a mention. Similarly, her life after release from the loony bin gets covered only in a title card before the credits.
