The cinematic event of 1999 desperately wants you to make it the cinematic event of 2000, as the (first) sequel to The Blair Witch Project is rushed into theaters just in time for Halloween. Alas, it's not to be, and soon the original will become regarded as a one-hit wonder and a footnote in the annals of independent film.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is clearly Made In Hollywood, but it's still trying to pretend to be a documentary. The story this time? In Book of Shadows, the original Blair Witch was "just a movie," but this time it's for real -- this is what happened after all those tourists descended upon Burkittsville, MD, believing the woods to be genuinely haunted.

"Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" exists for one reason and one reason only: Greed.

Artisan Entertainment -- the studio that purchased "The Blair Witch Project" last year at Sundance for $1 million and turned a $139 million profit -- isn't the least bit interested in whether this forced and fabricated sequel is any good. Quality and integrity don't enter into the equation. If they did, this movie wouldn't exist.

I don't have to tell you it stinks. You know that without seeing it. Everybody knows that. "Book of Shadows" is the first sequel in history that will turn a profit solely on morbid curiosity.

What could Spike Lee have been thinking?

Right on the heels of an unalloyed masterpiece, "25th Hour," the great American filmmaker delivers "She Hate Me," a bizarre, head-scratching hodgepodge of poorly executed bad ideas.

Many film buffs consider Lee a hit-and-miss director, but even his biggest failures ("Jungle Fever," "Summer of Sam," "Bamboozled") have had some kind of coherence, some alignment of angry, passionate ideas, painted with Lee's singular vision and voice.
