Actor Kevin Costner has taken a massive pay cut to star in a new romantic comedy, because he loved the 'stoner' character written for him.

The movie star, who normally commands fees of $15 million (GBP9.4 million) and upwards, agreed to a basic salary for his part in THE UPSIDE OF ANGER, which has an overall budget of just $10 million (GBP6.25 million).

The part of former baseball star-turned radio personality DENNY was also a great opportunity for him to work with longtime pal Joan Allen.

Costner says, "I just like the writing. I thought it was terribly insightful and personal. He's a person that talks about things we flinch at.

"He's a stoner, and he's a bit of a drunk. I'm such a fan of this guy.

"I'm also here with a friend. If it seems odd, that's what makes it more probable that I'd do it."
