Liebestraum Review

Very Good
Mike Figgis channels David Lynch and the Coen brothers' Barton Fink in this atmospheric neo-noir about a journalist who gets involved with an old friend's wife on the eve of the destruction of a historic cast-iron building. Ironically enough, the building is the site of a years-earlier triple-murder/suicide, in which a vengeful husband killed two cheating lovers.... Putting this all together isn't simple, as Figgis's way-convoluted tale takes you down many a dream-sequenced road. But the ride is a fun one, and the cast is surprisingly apt.

Rising Sun Review

OK
Wildly improbable (read: typical Crichton) tale about a murder in a Japanese office building. It's action heroes Connery and Snipes on the case, so look out! Plenty of Japanese subculture to be examined and often mocked, which led to charges of racism against the book and the movie.

Sleeping With The Enemy Review

Weak
Sleeping with the Enemy made over $100 million in 1991, and you can bet every penny came from the presence of Julia Roberts. This was when she was truly America's sweetheart thanks to that smile, that hair and a winning performance in Pretty Woman. At that time, you could have put her in a movie with a Sweathog and Scott Baio and it would have topped $85 million.

When I was 13 and first saw Sleeping with the Enemy I was under that spell, like every other heterosexual male in America. Having recently watched it again, I realize how duped I was.

A Thousand Acres Review

Bad
This adaptation (read: poor imitation) of Shakespeare's King Lear sports Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the three twisted sisters of ailing king Jason Robards -- only this time the kind is a farmer with a whopping 1000 acres. Parcelling the property becomes a headache thanks to Leigh's ungrateful bitch of a daughter, and soon enough a legal battle ensues... not to mention accusations of abuse, alcoholism, and every other hot-button sin you could name. No one is good in this movie. Everyone plays a variation on the annoying sad sack -- Pfeiffer probably being the worst of all. I don't know anything to redeem the movie except for an understated performance from Leigh -- unless you're into masochism. Avoid.
