The Maze Runner Sends More Teens Into A Dystopian Challenge

Dylan O'Brien Thomas Sangster Will Poulter Kaya Scodelario

It's another month, and another group of teenagers is taking on yet another oppressive post-apocalyptic society. Based on the first in a trilogy (of course!) of books by James Dashner, The Maze Runner is slightly unique due to its decidedly male approach: three dozen boys trying to navigate an imposing conundrum. And the film even includes a cast of rising-stars who make it worth a look, including Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf), Will Poulter (We're the Millers) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually), plus Kaya Scodelario (Skins) in the token female role.

Already this year, we've had Divergent with Shailene Woodley and The Giver with Brenton Thwaites, and next month we get the third instalment in the big mama of teen-dystopian movies: The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence.

The Maze Runner Review

Good

There's nothing particularly original or insightful to set this teen-dystopia thriller apart from the crowd, but strong characters will build some anticipation for the next instalment in the franchise. Unusually for the genre, the film also has a remarkably masculine tone, centring on boyish jostling for control while leaving the women in just two small-but-pivotal roles. On the other hand, it's to thinly plotted that it's pretty forgettable.

The story opens in a scene of disorientation, as teen Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) emerges into the Glade, unable to remember anything about himself or his past. He's the monthly arrival to a community of boys anchored by Alby (Aml Ameen) and the runners who dash into the maze beyond the four tall walls that close in their isolated world. But the maze is full of dangers, and paranoid leader Gally (Will Poulter) thinks Thomas is jeopardising the status quo with his curiosity, bravery and desire to get out. As divisions appear in the community, the game itself seems to be changing as monsters called grievers become more aggressive. Thomas finds allies in Gally's second-in-command Newt (Brodie-Sangster), the lead runner Minho (Ki Hong Lee) and cheery youngster Chuck (Blake Cooper). Then a girl (Kaya Scodelario) arrives carrying a note that says, "She is the last one EVER." And now everyone knows that nothing will be the same again.

Essentially this is Lord of the Flies with the nasty bits taken out, as these boys create a relatively peaceful society until Thomas' arrival signals an apocalypse within the post-apocalypse. Through it all, Thomas has dreams revealing snippets of information about what's really going on here and who's pulling the strings (the fabulous Patricia Clarkson). Meanwhile, he has to learn the mythology of the Glade, which is carefully explained in painfully obvious dialogue ("That's what we call 'the changing'").

'The Maze Runner' Is The Best "Hunger Games Wannabe" Yet

Dylan O'Brien Kaya Scodelario Will Poulter

The Maze Runner, an adaption of the first book in James Dashner's young-adult post-apocalyptic trilogy, hits theaters this weekend and appears to offer something more engaging than recent YA efforts, Divegent, The Giver and If I Stay.

The Maze RunnerDylan O'Brien stars in 'The Maze Runner'

With a talented and energetic cast including Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Will Poulter, The Maze Runner follows sixteen-year-old Thomas, who awakens in a rusty elevator with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon learns that he's in the middle of a complex and intricate maze with a group of other boys, each trying to navigate their way out while in the meantime establishing a functioning society.

The Maze Runner - Alternative Trailer

After awakening in a rising elevator with no memory of who he is or what his life was, Thomas finds himself deposited in a strange clearing surrounded by high walls. He is greeted by around 60 other boys, all teenagers, who inform him about their life in The Glade where they are forced to fend for themselves in order to survive. The only escape is a colossal surrounding maze that is frequented everyday by the runners who map out the labyrinth in a bid to find their way out. However, of course nothing is that simple and the boys are not alone in there. Infesting the twists and turns are brutal creatures known as Grievers who will stop at nothing to wipe out the Glade inhabitants. Things get more complicated when the first girl arrives in their midst; the boys are reluctant to trust her especially with the unusual message she presents to them.

Is 'The Maze Runner' The Next Big Young-Adult Movie?

Kaya Scodelario Dylan O'Brien Shailene Woodley

Just as everyone was beginning to get really hyped up for Shailene Woodley's upcoming flick Divergent it looks like another movie may be just about to steal its thunder. You've got to act fast in this business (or you'll get hunted down, if these movies are anything to go by!).  Based on the series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner certainly looks like it will be worthy of joining the list of big box office movies based on young adult books.  Over the past few years movies aimed at a young adult audience, such as the Harry Potter series, Twilight franchise, The Hunger Games and currently Dviergent, have been vastly popular, drawing in huge audiences of young adults and adults alike.  They've definitely become a guilty pleasure, whether you're 15 or 50 years old.

The Maze Runner
Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien will star in The Maze Runner

Starring Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien, The Maze Runner seems to be a solid contender to challenge The Hunger Games and Divergent in action and story, although unlike the other two movies, this one has a male lead. We think we’ll allow a boy to take control for once, there has been a lot of girl power in movies lately, we feel like we've had our fix!  Although no one could rival The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen in our eyes.

The Maze Runner is the latest young-adult novel to get a movie adaptation as studios become ever more convinced of the literary genre's ability to spawn megabucks franchises. The trailer for The Maze Runner - an adaptation of James Dashner's novel - aired during Monday's (March 17, 2014) Teen Wolf and caused quite the sir.

Dylan O'BrienWill Dylan O'Brien Escape the Maze?

The movie stars Dylan O'Brien as Thomas, a young guy who finds himself trapped in the middle of a giant maze. The only way out is, of course, to figure out the complex passages. The problem with that solitary option is that nobody has ever found an exit and unmentionable horrors lie at every turn.

Skins Returns For Series 7: Life In The Adult World

Kaya Scodelario Skins Kayvan Novak Jack O'Connell Nicholas Hoult Lara Pulver Hannah Murray

Skin's Effy Stonem is hardly the kind of girl you'd expect to be working in business but here she is in series seven working ambitiously as a trader for a London hedge fund. The seventh and final series of E4's long-running Skins drama, entitles Skins Redux, is about to air in the UK. However now, the drug-taking, promiscuous, hedonistic days of youth for Effy, Cassie and Cook are long gone as they wrestle with the practicalities of adult life, such as holding down a stable job, the loneliness of the big city, and the resurfacing of the past.

Kaya Scodelario
Effy's Life Has Changed Incredibly Since Last Time We Saw Her.

The seventh series will be quite short - in just six parts - but will be divided into three stories following Cassie, Effy and Cook. Each part will be themed differently: 'Skins Pure', 'Skins Rise' and 'Skins Fire,' with a different character taking centre stage in each. The once reserved girl who went off the rails, Effy, brother to Tony Stonem (Nicholas Hoult), is followed through her job working for a hedge fund firm where she embarks on an affair with her boss; with things getting out of hand in typical Skins style, according to The Mirror. Cook (Jack O'Connell) is working as a drug dealer in Manchester but after he falls for a woman he really shouldn't, he is forced to confront his violent past.

Now Is Good Review

OK

Preteen girls will find this soppy romance unbearably romantic, but everyone else will struggle to sit through it. Based on the Jenny Downham novel Before I Die, the movie feels like a British variation on the Nicolas Sparks genre with its seaside locations and teary drama. It looks lovely, but is so emotionally manipulative that older viewers are more likely to roll their eyes than shed a tear.

Dakota Fanning stars as 17-year-old Tessa, known locally as the girl with leukaemia who opted out of treatment. She has a secret bucket list that her parents (Considine and Williams) know nothing about, and her best pal Zoey (Scodelario) is helping her work through, from committing petty crime to trying drugs. But sex is at the forefront of Tessa's mind, especially when she meets the dreamy new boy next door. Adam (Irvine) is a sensitive soul who is dealing with his own grief, so is perfectly suited to help Tessa face her own mortality.

Writer-director Parker shamelessly steers each scene into the desired emotion. Some sequences are cute and silly, while others are melodramatic and tense, but it's all so deliberate that we never have a sense of real life taking place. There isn't a single throwaway moment, which prevents the actors from creating complex characters. Instead, they spend much of the time gazing at each other wistfully. Fanning's iridescent blue eyes are mesmerising, while Irvine's quivering features are strikingly beautiful, but we're left wondering why we should be interested in these mopey teens.

Tessa is like every other sixteen year old; she'd love a boyfriend and she'd like to lose her virginity as soon as possible. Her best friend Tessa encourages her wishes. There is a difference, however: Tessa has leukaemia. She was diagnosed with it four years ago but has recently learned that it is terminal.

Wuthering Heights Review

Excellent
Emily Bronte's novel is one of the most unsettling books you'll ever read, so it's about time a filmmaker made a darkly disturbing movie out of it. And Arnold's movie is like no other period adaptation we've ever seen: gritty, messy and thoroughly involving.

When the farmer Earnshaw (Hilton) brings a street urchin (Howson) home after a trip to Liverpool, he adopts him as a son and has him christened Heathcliff. He bonds quickly with Earnshaw's daughter Catherine (Beer), but her older brother Hindley (Shaw) continually abuses him. This only gets worse after Earnshaw's death, and when Cathy decides to marry the rich neighbour Linton (Northcote), Heathcliff runs away. Years later, he returns (now Howson) to confront Cathy (now Scodelario) about her true feelings.

Moon Review

Excellent
With a remarkable eye for detail, this low-key sci-fi thriller really gets under the skin as it probes the nature of humanity while keeping us on the edge of our seats. In the near future, Sam (Rockwell) is nearing the end of his three-year stint at a mining station on the dark side of the moon and looking forward to going home to his wife and daughter (McElligott and Scodelario). His only company is the computer Gerty (voiced by Spacey). But after an accident on the lunar surface, he has the surreal experience of meeting himself in the station. Together, the two Sams try to figure out what's going on and what'll happen when the rescue team arrives to find two of them.

The film has heavy shadings of three space classics: 2001, Solaris and Silent Running, both in the way it's designed and in its quiet examination of human nature. When reality starts slipping from his grasp, Sam faces an existential crisis and must figure out who he is regardless of what anyone has told him.

And this is what gives the film its kick, even when the plot itself becomes a bit subtle or vague.
