A host of stars including Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Joel Madden have voiced their support for Taylor Swift after Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (13Sep09).
Swift was collecting her first ever VMA - the Best Female Video prize - when the outspoken rapper stormed the stage in protest, snatching the microphone from the 19 year old and ranting that the honour belonged to Beyonce for her video Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).
West was reportedly escorted out of the Radio City Music Hall venue, before taking to his blog to apologise for his behaviour.
But his statement failed to extinguish the fury of several celebrities, who blasted West and flooded the internet with messages of support for the country singer.
Singer Kelly Clarkson wrote on her blog, "Dear Kanye, What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we’re all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone (sic) teenager, feel like s**t. I mean, I’ve seen you do some pretty s**tty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, a**hole ways.
"The best part of this evening is that you weren’t even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man (MTV award) that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up... I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her…so why can’t you be?? I’m not even mad at you for being an a**hole…I just pity you because you’re a sad human being. Taylor Swift, you outsell him. That’s why he’s bitter."
Other celebrity Swift fans rushed to Twitter.com to slam West and congratulate Swift - Good Charlotte star Joel Madden wrote, "WOW Taylor Swift's first VMA and she didn't even get to ENJOY it. Kanye you were just a bully on that one man."
Fellow pop star Katy Perry wrote on her page: "F**K U Kanye. It's like u stepped on a kitten," while Ricky Martin added, "Kanye, what an a**hole dude. (Swift) has sold more than 10 million cds in the last 2 years u deserve the award. 10 million fans cant be wrong. enjoy ur night!"
Swift was eventually given a chance to address her fans after Beyonce called her back onstage and handed her the microphone after winning the Video Of The Year statuette for Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).
