Jazz singer Katie Melua is set to sing Kirsty Maccoll's lyrics from FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK in a televised duet with The Pogues.
The 21-year-old Georgian-born star will perform the 1987 Christmas classic with Shane MacGowan on BBC TV show FRIDAY NIGHT WITH JONATHAN ROSS on 9 December (05). MacGowan has also invited Melua to sing the song during the group's UK tour over Christmas.
A source says, "Shane saw Katie on TV and thought she would be perfect.
"She will join the band for some of the live dates. The Pogues are planning a series of different women to sing the part during the tour.
Shamed supermodel Kate Moss will sing on a recorded version of the song.
MacColl was tragically killed by a speedboat while diving with her two sons off the Mexican island of Cozumel in December 2000.
