Katie Melua used to find marriage ''scary''.

The 'Nine Million Bicycles' singer got engaged to former World Superbike racer James Toseland in January but she admits she never thought about tying the knot until she met him as she wasn't convinced at the thought of spending the rest of your life with just one person.

She said: ''Marriage seemed so scary then. But once you have met the right person...''

Katie, 27, says she was shocked when James popped the question but accepted the proposal straight away.

She told You magazine: ''I just couldn't believe it. I can't remember exactly what he said. All I know is that I said yes.''

She was also thrilled with The Ring her gave her, saying: ''Isn't it stunning? I am not that into jewellery, but when it's given with such a huge level of love and commitment and romance - well, it's pretty cool.''

Although she is very happy, Katie - who suffered a nervous breakdown two years ago - still says she doesn't believe in fairy tales.

She said: ''Looking from the outside, it appears I am having a happy-ever-after. But the reality can be different from the fairy tale.''
