Just 10 days after Katie Holmes filed for divorce from hubby Tom Cruise, their divorce has been finalised. TMZ reported on the news yesterday (July 9, 2012), confirming that the speedy settlement had been agreed upon behind closed doors. Tom Cruise is a high profile member of the publicity-shy Church of Scientology and it is understood that Katie and Tom's lawyers wanted the divorce process settled in private, possibly to avoid the religion's secrets being scrutinised in a public trial.
Speaking to TMZ, Jonathan Wolfe (from Katie's own legal camp) told the website "This case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life." Daily Mail have suggested that Katie will have 'sole custody' of their daughter Suri, though Tom has requested 'significant custodial time' with his daughter. They also report that the agreement "includes details on what Tom and Katie are allowed to tell Suri regarding religion, including Scientology."
Both parties have remained tight-lipped with regards to their divorce but they have now released a joint statement which states that "they will continue to work together as parents and 'express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs'. We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests.
'We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
