Katie Holmes may have filed for divorce from Tom Cruise outside of California because it could help protect her privacy, a veteran legal worker has said.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, veteran divorce attorney Raoul Felder said; "My guess is that she brought it in New York because files are sealed." He went on to say; "If it was in California, it's all public and you can walk into the clerk's office and get the papers." As the breakup winds through the courts, the decision to file for divorce in New York rather than California might have been due to the state's more stringent divorce laws or one of convenience (Holmes and the couple's daughter, Suri, 6, are currently living in New York). The court papers will now be hidden from the press, unlike in the former couple's home state of California, where gossip websites seemingly get their hands on papers hours after they are filed.
Celebrities who have filed for divorce in California in the past have been subject to media scrutiny. In a more recent case, court documents detailed the property and assets changing hands during Kobe Bryant's divorce proceedings. Similarly, court papers revealed details about former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's divorce from MARIA SHRIVER.
