Katie Holmes (born 18.12.1978)
Katie Holmes is an American actress who first rose to fame in Dawson's Creek and is also known for her marriage to the actor Tom Cruise.
Katie Holmes: Childhood
Katie Holmes was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. Her parents were Kathleen Stothers and Martin Holmes (a divorce attorney). She is the youngest of five siblings.
Katie was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended the all-girl Notre Dame Academy. She appeared in school musicals at the nearby all-male school, playing a waiter in Hello, Dolly! and Lola in Damn Yankees.
Katie Holmes: Acting Career
Aged 14, Holmes started attending modeling classes in Toledo. She performed a monologue from To Kill A Mockingbird at an international talent competition and the tape was sent to the casting director for Ang Lee's The Ice Storm. She was cast in the film as Libbets Casey.
In 1997, Holmes reportedly turned down the lead role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
When the auditions for Dawson's Creek clashed with her school performance of Hello Dolly!, Katie was permitted to audition for the role of Joey Potter via videotape, with her mother reading Dawson's lines.
Katie filmed Dawson's Creek in her spring break each year whilst she was at school. She later moved to Wilmington, where the show was filmed, once The WB had picked it up. The series was widely marketed and Holmes became hugely popular, with many casting agents looking to cast 'a Katie Holmes' type. She soon appeared on the cover of magazines such as Seventeen and Rolling Stone. In 1998, she was given the role of grand marshal at Toledo's Thanksgiving Day parade.
Katie Holmes' first lead role in a film came in Disturbing Behaviour, released in 1998. Although Holmes described the film as "horrible", she won a MTV Movie Award for her performance. The next year, she appeared in Doug Liman's hit, Go. The same year, Teaching Mrs. Tingle was released, in which she played a student whose teacher (played by Helen Mirren) tries to prevent her from gaining a scholarship. In 2000, Holmes had a small role in Curtis Hanson's Wonder Boys and Sam Raimi's The Gift, which also featured Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves. The Gift is notable for featuring Holmes in her first nude scene.
Other film appearances include Abandon (2002), Phone Booth (2002) and The Singing Detective (2003), when she played Robert Downey Jr.'s nurse. In 2004, Katie played the president's daughter in First Daughter . The film received terrible reviews and suffered from very poor ticket sales at the cinema. The most successful film of Holmes' career was Batman Begins, released in 2005. In the film, she plays Rachel Dawes, a Gotham City attorney. She also appeared in Thank You For Smoking, alongside Aaron Eckhart.
Katie Holmes: Personal Life
During the first and second season of Dawson's Creek, Katie Holmes dated co-star Joshua Jackson but the relationship ended on friendly terms. In 2000, she met the actor Chris Klein. In 2003, the pair were engaged but two years later, the relationship had ended.
Not long after the split with Klein, Holmes began dating Tom Cruise. In April 2005, they made their first public appearance in Italy at the David di Donatello Awards. In May 2005, Cruise appeared in the Oprah Winfrey show, jumping up and down on the sofa and declaring his love for Katie. Less than a month later, Cruise proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Katie Holmes gave birth to her first child, a girl named Suri, on 18.4.2006, exactly one year after her and Cruise had met. Photographer Annie Liebowitz took the first public photographs of Suri, for Vanity Fair. Tom Cruise stated that Suri would not be baptized as a Catholic, as he and Katie were Scientologists.
On 18.11.2006, the pair was married at Odescalchi castle in Italy. The Scientology ceremony was attended by a number of Hollywood stars.
A source had told the US edition of OK! magazine that Holmes and Foxx were expecting a baby together.
For more than a year now, unconfirmed reports have claimed that Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes are in a clandestine relationship, but U.S. OK! magazine has got the rumours swirling again by suggesting that the pair have called off their wedding (!) because they’re expecting a baby together (!!).
Okay, so lots of WTFs there - let's try to sort this out.
Foxx’s representatives told The Mirror on Friday (May 20th) that all rumours of babies, failed marriages and secret relationships are “categorically untrue”.

Katie Holmes has recalled her "awkward" first ever on-screen kiss on Dawson's Creek.
The 37-year-old actress first shot to fame playing Joey Potter in the hit television show, which ran from 1998 to 2003. During her time on the programme, Katie had her fair share of passionate scenes, but admits the prospect of on-screen kisses as a youngster was incredibly daunting.
"I do remember my first (on-screen kiss)," Katie said during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. "I was 18 and it was on Dawson's Creek. It was a guest star. It's so awkward because with the first kiss in life you can kind of be like, 'Oh I've got to get home,' or 'Thanks' - you never have to do it with that person again. But on screen you're going to have lunch and you're probably going to have to work together again tomorrow so it's a little bit… awkward!"
James then pushed Katie to answer who was the best on-screen kisser between her former co-stars James Van Der Beek and Joshua Jackson, who played Dawson and Pacey in the show respectively.

Katie Holmes has dismissed any plans for a remake of Dawson's Creek, the teen drama series that made her famous, saying it wouldn't work in 2016.
In an interview with the Today show, Katie revealed she doesn't think that the series, which also starred James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams, would be relevant if it followed in the footsteps of the recently revamped 90s TV programme Full House.
"When I look back at the show, it had a certain charm,” the actress, who starred as Joey Potter, said. “It was before the Internet really took over, it was before iPhones, it was before this kind of new form of communication, and it had this certain feeling that was of the ’90s.
"I don’t think that in today’s world, you could achieve that same kind of feeling."

Katie Holmes turned to her love of cooking while filming new movie Touched With Fire to help her "decompress" from portraying a woman with bipolar disorder.
The Batman Begins actress and her co-star Luke Kirby portray manic depressives on the run from a hospital in the emotional drama, and Katie admits making a home-cooked meal each night after filming was her way to relax.
"It was very intense and I actually cooked a lot on the movie because I needed to decompress," she explained on celebrity chef Mario Batali's U.S. cooking show The Chew. "I even baked a little. I made a blueberry pie, a lot of pastas and things..."
Katie reveals she shares the hobby with her daughter Suri, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, and the nine-year-old has taken well to whipping up fresh Italian food with mum.

Actress Christine Lahti jumped at the chance to appear in bipolar director Paul Dalio's new movie so she could honour her sister, who fought the condition.
The Running On Empty star plays the mother of Katie Holmes' bipolar character in Touched With Fire and she admits watching her co-star go through the motions of a manic depressive brought back wonderful and terrible memories of her sister's battle.
"My sister struggled with severe bipolar illness and I mean her highs were psychotic highs and her lows were very bad," Christine told WENN. "So I went into this film with a lot of knowledge.
"I read the script and I met with Paul and, since he's bipolar, I thought I had to do this film. This is his story in a way."

Bipolar director Paul Dalio's new film about the condition has been hailed a breakthrough by mental health organisations.
Touched With Fire, in which Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby portray manic depressives on the run from a hospital, has been picked up by officials at several foundations and charities, and they hope to stage special screenings to help those suffering from the condition and their nearest and dearest.
Dalio, who spent five years in and out of psychiatric hospitals until he overcame his struggles with manic depression, is thrilled his latest movie has been so well received.
"It's been astounding," he told WENN. "A series of organisations got behind us and wanted to use the film and go around the country and have screenings, like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
