British actress Kathy Burke almost died after contracting a deadly superbug in a London hospital last year (07). The Nil By Mouth star contracted Clostridium difficle - which thrives in unhygienic conditions - while being treated for abdominal problems by the National Health Service (NHS). Burke was forced to take a year off from work and lost 28 pounds (12.8 kilograms) due to the illness. She says, "I got quite ill last year with loads of stuff. It all happened at once. I had that C.difficile hospital bug that everyone is going on about. It was an experience. There's not much they can do. They just let you get on with it. It's a breakdown of the whole immune system. "To be fair to the NHS, I did catch the bug because something else was seriously wrong with me that nobody knew about. My adrenal glands were packing in. Once they opened me up and operated on me, I was susceptible to lots of other things." C.difficile was the cause of over 4,000 deaths in the U.K. last year (07).
