The awards celebrate Britain's unsung heroes, which this year included Welsh lollipop lady Karin Williams who threw herself in front of an out of control car to save a group of children. The kids also accompanied Ms. Williams to the awards. Attending the awards in a wheelchair, Ms. Williams' modesty was moving.
Welsh opera singer hits back at Jan Moir, Daily Mail columnist
Jan Moir, Daily Mail columnist (some would call her a troll but we’ll leave that down to individual judgement) has yet again managed to anger the public (and Katherine Jenkins… well, firstly Katherine Jenkins and then a ton of people afterwards), by suggesting that the Welsh opera singer was looking all too glam as she finished the London marathon last weekend.
Moir accused Jenkins’ marathon-running efforts of being yet another example of the “thick fog of self-interest that seems to cloak everything she does.” She highlighted the “lashings of pink lip gloss, sooty false eyelashes and sweeping, coal black eyeliner” that she thought Jenkins was wearing throughout the race. Hitting back at Moir via Twitter, Jenkins couldn’t quite contain her anger within one tweet, so used a handy tweet-extension service to allow her to get her full argument across in one swoop.
She wrote: “Jan (Moir), I wish you love & happiness in your life. I adore & support other women and I only wish you could do the same. I ran on Sunday in memory of my father & to raise money (£25,000) for an excellent charity (@macmillancancer) who helped him when he was dying. Yes, I twittered about it but I did so to share my progress & day with those kind people on twitter who had supported & sponsored me. I ran in sunglasses because it was sunny. I tied my hair back in a pony tail because I expected to sweat. As if you had some insider knowledge you wrote I was wearing eye shadow, eye liner& lip gloss. Wrong again - none of the above - I had Vaseline on my lips, handed to us by St Johns Ambulance on our way round the route. You can knock me all you like but you cannot take away from me what I know I accomplished last weekend. Next time you run a marathon Jan, I will be the first to sponsor you, because I know how much guts, hard work & determination it takes.” It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who won that one, now, does it...?
Margaret Thatcher's death has incited plenty of views on Twitter.
A website titled "Is Margaret Thatcher Dead?" has received a slew of criticism in recent years for its tasteless daily updates of whether or not the Baroness had passed away. Nevertheless, the website finally showed a huge YES today as reports came in that the former Prime Minister died from a stroke. She was the first female prime minister when she entered Downing Street in 1979.
Though the intellectuals, historians and biographers are having their say on Thatcher's legacy, the celebrities were also weighing in on her passing - among them, Harry Styles. The One Direction star came out as a Labour supporter last year, though he paid tribute to the former Tory leader in a tweeting this morning, saying, "RIP Baroness Thatcher.x" He and his One Direction pals buddied up with Prime Minister David Cameron for their Comic Relief campaign earlier this year.
Geri Halliwell, who has made no secret of her love for Thatcher, was another celebrity to pay tribute, saying, "Thinking of our 1st Lady of girl power ,Margaret Thatcher , a green grocer's daughter who taught me any thing is possible...x"

It's that time of year again people. The Royal Variety Performance was taped on Monday evening (November 19, 2012) and featured a whole host of entertainment stars taking to the stage at London's Albert Hall in front of one very special guest. This year, the Queen witnessed performances from the likes of One Direction, Girls Aloud and Katherine Jenkins, reports the Daily Mirror.
Fresh from their stateside success, the 1D boys were back in London to perform new single 'Little Things', though we're not sure how it went down with her majesty. David Walliams' skit afterwards probably confused her even more; the Little Britain star bounding on-stage in a wig and red cardigan while pretending to be a stalker. "I've got a washing machine and I named it One Direction. You make me so happy," he yelled in a high pitched voice. "Was your song What Makes You Beautiful written about me? I love you so much. Will you marry me?" The group turned down his proposal before he approached heartthrob Harry Styles to ask him to "take a photo" of him with the rest of the boys. Walliams, 41, hosted the evening with Amanda Holden also on-hand to introduce some of the acts.
Elsewhere, a reunited Girls Aloud took to the stage to perform 'The Promise' and Cheryl Cole spoke of meeting the Queen afterwards. "The Queen is so delicate. She has hair like Candy floss and tiny dancing style shoes, awww. Another highlight was Alicia Keys, such an incredibly talented and down to earth woman," she said. The 100th anniversary of the Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV on December 3, also featuring performances from Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams and Neil Diamond.
Katherine Jenkins: the Welsh lady with a voice of an Angel, there is no doubt at all, but who also possesses a heart of a lion. She has fought against her former record label Universal and openly criticized them for rejigging her old work and releasing yet another album in her name. Katherine releases her new record 'Daydream' and has announced a twenty five venue tour with the same name sake. This should avoid any confusion on which album the fans should be buying.
