Katherine Heigl has blamed the pressures of being a working mother on her trouble bonding with her adopted daughter Naleigh.
Katherine Heigl has revealed her daughter's first word was "Dada".
The 31-year-old actress has revealed 20-month-old adopted Naleigh - who she adopted from South Korea - bonded with her father, Josh Kelly, before anyone else.
She explained: "The first thing she said was, 'Dada,' and then she'd call everybody else she loved 'Dada'. She actually attached to Josh much faster."
Katherine believes Naleigh got more attached to her father because she decided to go back to work.
She added in an interview with InStyle magazine: "I had a lot of complicated emotions about it because I chose to go back to work. I love what I do and - this isn't just making excuses - if I weren't fulfilling this thing In Me to perform, to live out my passion, I don't know that I would be the mom I need to be."
However, the 'Life As We Know It' actress - who has now cut back on work from nine months a year to three - soon found a way to encourage Naleigh to say "Mama".
She said: "Naleigh learned with me that the word 'Mama' was synonymous with kisses. So when she first started saying 'Mama' she would also make a little kiss sound. She started saying it maybe a month or two ago. I would come into the room and she'd go, 'Mama!' And it was like, Thank God!"
