Katharine Mcphee has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg's television musical drama 'Smash'.
KATHARINE MCPHEE, the American Idol runner-up, has signed up to star in the pilot episode of STEVEN SPIELBERG's new musical drama 'Smash', according to the Hollywood Reporter.The pilot for US network NBC will revolve around a number of characters who come together to create a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe. The episode has been written by the acclaimed playwright Theresa Rebeck and Michael Mayer is set to direct. Spielberg will act as executive producer alongside DARRYL FRANK and JUSTIN FALVEY. 'Smash' will no doubt be looking to emulate the phenomenal success of musical-comedy 'Glee' and Tony-winning songwriters MARC SHAIMAN and SCOTT WITTMAN have signed up to write original songs for the project. Debra Messing and Jack Davenport will act as lyricist and choreographer, respectively.
MCPhee, who released her self-titled debut album back in 2007, made a TV pilot for a new comedy series called 'The Pink House' last year. The show was produced by CONAN O BRIEN's production company with the television host acting as executive producer, however, the pilot was rejected by NBC.
