William and Kate famously met while studying together at St. Andrews University in Edinburgh. The couple have been together for over ten years and recently Kate gave birth to their first child together. There’s something very honest and real about Kate and Wills’ relationship, we’d love to have been a fly on the wall of their student house! Since their engagement, Kate has become hugely popular as a style icon and a national treasure, much in the way William’s own mother, Princess Diana, did before her.

Kate and Wills definitely get our vote for most romantic couple, but what other famous couples before them were also worthy of the title?

Edward I and Eleanor of Castile

Ever wondered why so many places in London have the word ‘cross’ after them? When King Edward I’s wife, Eleanor of Castile, died in 1290, the heartbroken king dedicated 12 monuments to his wife throughout the city. Each cross indicates a resting place that her coffin spent on the way to her funeral. Very sad, yes, but terribly romantic.

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo embarked on a life long love affair with her husband, Diego Rivera, when she was 22 years old. The couple had their fair share of turbulence but always returned to one another. They briefly divorced in 1939 but by 1940 were back together and remained so until Frida’s death in 1954.

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

Gone With the Wind star, Clark Gable, met Carole Lombard in 1932 when they worked on No Man of her Own together. Carole was married at the time and when they next met in 1935 she was divorced, but Gable was not. In 1939 they finally married, after waiting nearly 7 years for each other. Sadly, in 1942 Carole died in a plane crash near Las Vegas. While Gable married twice more, he never truly got over the loss of Lombard, who his third wife buried him next to when he died aged 61.

Noah and Allie

OK, OK, this couple are characters in the movie The Notebook but who out there doesn’t wish for a love affair like theirs? The Notebook may be based on a cheesy Nicholas Sparks novel, but at the end of the day, Noah, if you’re a bird, I’m a bird.

Aaron Paul and Lauren Parsekian

We’re torn between romantic and cringe when it comes to these two. Aaron regularly posts gushing tweets about Lauren and has called her ‘the most magical woman on the planet’, while Lauren has dubbed Aaron ‘perfect’ on the social media site. What do you lot think, romantic or over share?
