Kate Beckinsale's past French and Russian language studies came to good use when she was asked to provide an authentic accent for her new Romanian princess role in Van Helsing.

The PEARL HARBOR star studied languages at OXFORD UNIVERSITY in England, but she never imagined the degree would help her play gypsy royalty on the big screen.

She explains, "Languages have been precisely no use to me whatsoever, except I suddenly find I have to do this Slavic accent.

"I wrote all my lines in the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet because it made it much easier to actually pronounce them as if they were Russian words, and then we just tweaked with it. It was very fancy of me."
