Anaconda Review

Bad
Really awful giant snake movie, notable for Jon Voight's worst role ever, where he uses the pet phrase "baby bird" repeatedly and is unforgettably swallowed whole by the creature, not to mention an early Jennifer Lopez appearance. Catch it on Cinemax or something if you feel you must, but we're hard-pressed to find anything worth recommending in this wannabe camp classic that turns out to be a wholly unbelievable camp disaster.

Eight Legged Freaks Review

Weak
Spiders are annoying little creatures that always find ways to invade your space. Many people find the sight of them scary, but usually a good-soled shoe is the best defense. But the spiders of Eight Legged Freaks are so massive that a shoe won't even dent their exoskeleton; too bad the film itself leaves a similarly lackluster impression.

In the Arizona desert town of Prosperity, there is little to get excited about - not even the sparkling new shopping mall can bring energy to this lifeless place. But when a toxic spill oozes its way to a spider farm (local industry!), the spiders mutate into gigantic monsters and this sleepy town is in for a rude awakening. After eating up the dog, cat, and ostrich population, hundreds of hungry eight-legged beasts are ready to feast on the residents. It is now up to a love-struck miner (David Arquette), the best-looking sheriff since Suzanne Somers (Kari Wuhrer), her kids (Scarlett Johansson and Scott Terra), and an annoying ham-radio operator (Doug E. Doug) to save this who-really-cares little town.

Kissing A Fool Review

Weak
Droll and patently unbelievable, Kissing a Fool invites you to believe that David Schwimmer is a sports buff and, ya know, a real ladies' man. If you find Schwimmer the sexy type, Fool will be right up your alley. If, like the rest of us, you think lil' Dave is a geek -- and you find the "I'm testing my fiancee to see if she'll cheat on me" plot to be distasteful -- then you may want to pass. A few moments of watchability (and the pleasingly pretty Avital) punctuated by flat jokes a movie do not make.

Hellraiser: Deader Review

Bad
It doesn't take long for most horror franchises to peter out. Eventually all of these series take their cast to space, end up on direct-to-video discs, and feature Kari Wuhrer in the starring role.

Hellraiser: Deader is the impossible seventh film in the increasingly staid Hellraiser franchise (and believe it or not, an eighth DTV title is due out in September).

Eight Legged Freaks Review

OK

A truck carrying radioactive waste, a sleepy driver, a rabbit in the middle of the road and a subsequent crash near a dilapidated roadside attraction called Taft's Exotic Spider Farm are all it takes to make the opening scene of "Eight Legged Freaks" feel packed with comedy-horror promise.

For the most part, this tongue-in-cheek homage to 1950s monster-bug movies lives up to that promise, bringing hordes of giant mutant spiders to the screen to prey on B-list stars like David Arquette ("Scream," etc.) Kari Wuhrer ("Anaconda"), Scarlett Johansson ("Ghost World") and Doug E. Doug ("Operation Dumbo Drop") -- all of whom happily exhibit their best B-movie bombast.

Long on cheese, refreshingly short on gore (spiders don't bleed, they ooze green goop), "Freaks" maintains a balance between creepy scares that startle, silly scares that get a laugh and moments that make you go, "Ewww!" The movie never aspires to anything more than eventually getting the entire (surviving) population of a Southwestern small town into their run-down shopping mall, where they try to beat down enormous arachnids with sporting goods and mannequins.
