The annual MACY'S Thanksgiving Day Parade' got underway in New York City today (25th November 2010), drawing tens of thousands of spectators to witness musical performances from the likes of Kanye West and Gladys Knight. Millions more watched the action unfold on their television sets, and the Broadway casts of 'American Idiot' and 'Elf' also joined the extravaganza.
The parade began on Central Park West and proceeded to move down Seventh and Sixth avenues before heading onto 34th street. The celebrations saw marching bands from across the United States, as well as thousands of giant balloons including a 'Po The Kung Fu Panda', 'Spiderman', and 'Snoopy'. The city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, told CBS News, "Spidey is my new favourite". KANYE WEST is due to perform tracks from his new album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' at the event later today.
The 'MACy's Parade' first began in 1924 after employees from 'MACy's' department store marched in costume through New York City. The event was cancelled between 1942 and 1944 because the country's helium and rubber were required for World War II.
