In case you missed it, earlier this week, Kanye West announced he plans to run for President of the United States in 2020. This isn’t the first time West has shocked audiences with his outlandish claims so, in celebration of West’s oratory, we’ve compiled a short list of his most wonderfully bizarre speeches to date.

5. Glastonbury 2015 – Kanye Vs. Every Other Musician in the World

The Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival has been graced by the presence of some incredible musicians over the years, including the likes of The Rolling Stones and U2. West performed on the stage at this year’s festival and during his performance, he declared himself to be “the greatest living rock star on the planet.”

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on West’s self-proclaimed greatness but isn’t this statement a step too far even by his standards? It certainly was for many festival-goers who responded to West’s claims with glee.

4. Sydney Yeezus Concert 2014 – Kanye Vs. His Own Audience

West caused controversy in September 2014 when he refused to perform unless every single member of his audience at his Yeezus concert in Sydney stood up. Unfortunately, West failed to recognise there were a number of his fans in the audience who were unable to stand as they were disabled and in wheelchairs.

"I can't do this show until everybody stand up. Unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and s**t,” West reportedly told his audience. “Imma see you if you ain't standing up, believe me, I'm very good at that."

West went so far as to send one of his employees to check that the seated members of the audience were disabled but he continued to whine about the delay.

Classy move, Kanye.

3. VMAs 2009 – Kanye Vs. Taylor Swift

One of the most cringe inducing moments in recent pop history has to be when West followed Taylor Swift on stage whilst she was accepting her VMA award for Best Female Video in 2009. Swift was overwhelmed when she accepted the award but was rendered completely speechless when West snatched the microphone from her to declare his support for Beyoncé

“I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish,” West said after grabbing the microphone from Swift. “But Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time… The best video of all time.”

2. Grammy Awards 2015 - Kanye Vs. Beck

As we’ve seen, West isn’t one for keeping his opinion to himself and he certainly wasn’t going to remain silent when his preferred nominee - Beyoncé yet again - didn’t win the Grammy Award for Best Album back in February. Beck received the award instead and, after West jokingly attempted to take the award from Beck during his acceptance speech, West launched into an epic tirade against Beck.

“Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it,” West declared in a televised interview shortly after Beck had received the award.

Kanye later backtracked on his comments, stating he had “mis-worded” his remarks and that Beck does respect artistry. Fortunately, Beck wasn’t too fussed and managed to laugh off the incident.

1. VMAs 2015 - Kanye Vs. The Political Elite?

We’ve mentioned it before but West’s speech at this year’s VMAs has to be his most bizarre ever. He received the Vanguard Award at the ceremony, presented by Swift, and made an 11-minute long acceptance speech. In addition to casually announcing his decision to run for President in 2020, West’s speech included a ramble about the time he interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech in 2009. He didn’t apologise for the incident but implied he would do things differently now. He also admitted to using cannabis before going on stage.

“First of all, thank you, Taylor, for being so gracious and giving me this award this evening,” West said, as MTV reports.

“And I often think back to the first day I met you also. You know I think about when I’m in the grocery store with my daughter and I have a really great conversation about fresh juice… and at the end they say, ’Oh, you’re not that bad after all!’ And like I think about it sometimes. … It crosses my mind a little bit like when I go to a baseball game and 60,000 people boo me. Crosses my mind a little bit.”

“And I think if I had to do it all over again what would I have done? Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank half a bottle of Hennessy and gave the rest of it to the audience? Ya’ll know ya’ll drank that bottle too! If I had a daughter at that time would I have went on stage and grabbed the mic from someone else’s?”
