The TV Set Review

OK
Here's the deal: back in 1999, Jake Kasdan, Judd Apatow, and Paul Feig were the driving forces behind Freaks & Geeks, a high school series that was arguably one of the best shows ever on television. Well, people were really into that whole Friends thing so it got cancelled. Kasdan and Apatow went on to make Undeclared, a college series almost as good as its predecessor. But it got cancelled because the public wanted to see how many cockroaches someone could eat while being hassled by the handyman from NewsRadio.

Apatow and Kasdan got their wits about them and moved to the big screen. Kasdan directed the enjoyably ramshackle Orange County while Apatow went onto direct sleeper hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin. As we wait for Apatow's much-touted Knocked Up, Kasdan gives us his follow up: The TV Set, a thinly-veiled attack on the people behind the boob tube, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival almost a year ago.

Highball Review

Good
Noah Baumbach gathered up his Kicking and Screaming and Mr. Jealousy buddies and threw together this little flick in six days. He then stuck an alias (Ernie Fusco) on it, and that was about it. Mostly consisting of recycled jokes that didn't make it into his earlier films, Highball is still frequently funny while it's perpetually random. Gotta love Carlos Jacott no matter what he does, though. And extra points for creative use of two giant lizard suits.

God's Lonely Man Review

Good
I usually place no stock on Internet Movie Database user comments, but when I spied "worst movie ever" on God's Lonely Man listing, my eyebrow arched a bit.

A clear inspiration for 2000's States of Control, 1996's God's Lonely Man features a man (instead of States' woman) lost in life. He does all the drugs he can when he isn't working at an adult video store. When he gets fired, he goes mental, shoots his dealer, attempts suicide, and after failing cuts off his pinky! He then gets involved with a 15-year-old call girl before "rescuing" her from her sexually abusive stepdad and busting up a snuff film ring.
