Get ready for another YouTube smash sensation, this time coming from the Far East. Psy's Gangnam Style YouTube video has absolutely taken off on a global scale, raking in nearly 100 million views and attracting the attention of huge western stars like Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado and Josh Groban. The Korean pop song was originally posted onto the video uploading site on July 15th, according to The Franchise Herald, and stands at some 95 million hits around a month and a half later.
A lot of the success comes from the video itself, which sees Psy portraying and walking around a version of Gangnam where he pokes fun at people's desire for material objects and an obsession with a life of luxury. Gangnam is known as a particularly wealthy area of South Korea, and the country as a whole has become the world's 11th largest coffee market - something picked up on by Psy in the lyric "A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee." The song's success is drawing eerie parallels with Australian Gotye, who's Somebody I Used To Know managed to become a chart sensation after first conquering the YouTube world. Its viewing figures drew it to the attention of some of the world's major music stars and it went top of both the US and UK singles charts. The original upload has currently amassed some 312.6 million views.
