Juliette Lewis has been speaking about two battles in her personal life, with drugs and depression. In a frank interview, Lewis opened up about how she quit drugs nearly two decades ago with the help of her support network of family and friends.

The actress was speaking to People magazine on Friday as part of promotional material for her new ABC show ‘Secrets and Lies’ when she made the revelations. “I quit drugs at 22. I travelled a lot, I dealt with my priorities. I have such a beautiful, strong family and friends and they are like everything to me.”

The interview came just a couple of days after her new co-star Ryan Phillippe revealed that he struggles with depression, and Lewis too told about her own mental health issues. “I can tell you I have dealt with mania my whole life.” She then referenced Phillippe’s interview, adding humorously “I'm gonna top his depression. I am manic and crazy!”

In ‘Secrets and Lies’, 41 year old Lewis plays Detective Andrea Crawford who investigates a murder in which Philippe’s character Ben Crawford is implicated. She took the opportunity to praise her co-star, calling his a breakout performance and his handling of such a dramatic part “phenomenal”.

“That's a role of a lifetime,” she said. “He plays a broken man, a guy on the edge. Not many actors have to play that realm of emotion.” ‘Secrets and Lies’ premiered last Sunday (March 1st), but most initial reviews of the first episode were lukewarm at best, with many claiming that the characters and plot were uninspired.

Lewis has had an eventful and varied career since making her own breakout performance in 1991’s remake of Cape Fear. She’s made award-nomination appearances in Natural Born Killers (1994), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and August: Osage County (2013), in addition to a short-lived musical career fronting the garage rock revival band Juliette Lewis & The Licks.
