For Your Eyes Only Review

Very Good
As unlikely an adventure as James Bond has ever taken, For Your Eyes Only is one of the better Roger Moore vehicles, thanks to a script that overflows with exotic locales and extreme adventures for our hero to undertake. Eyes features Bond's best ski sequence (from slopes to ski ramp to lodge dining table to bobsled run), one of the best underwater moments (with Bond and his lady friend tied to a boat and dragged through a coral reef), and some of the best Bond-girl skin seen to date. Carole Bouquet even proved to be one of a very few Bond girls who could act, and it's refreshing to see Bond restrain himself from Bibi (Johnson), a young figure skater oblivious to everything but athletics and sex. The "stolen encryption device heading for Moscow" plot is a throwaway, but the real standout is Bond's steeled attitude: his mind clearly renewing his "license to kill," giving us Roger Moore at his most vengeful.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade Review

Essential
Released in 1989, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one of the reasons why I believe in the summer blockbuster. The movie provides us with unadulterated entertainment for more than two hours, which is a nearly impossible feat to pull off these days. And it's a sequel, to boot. I don't think there was thirty minutes of entertainment in Charlie's Angles: Full Throttle and American Wedding combined.

Those two ill-fated movies didn't have half the talent behind Last Crusade. Steven Spielberg is back behind the camera, with executive producer George Lucas co-creating the nifty story, which has Indiana Jones recruited by a wealthy collector (Julian Glover) to find nothing less than the Holy Grail. Along the way, Indy encounters a well-armed band of religious zealots, Nazis, and his fussy father (Sean Connery), the missing leader of the Grail project who doesn't embrace his son's sense of adventure.

Vatel Review

Very Good
If you've ever heard of Vatel, it's probably only because you remember it was nominated for a Best Art Direction Oscar in 2000. And indeed, this is a lovely film to watch, even on the small screen. What I hadn't counted on was that Vatel would contain a good story with very capable acting, genuinely intriguing -- and based on a historical event, to boot.

Vatel is the central character in a critical weekend in French history (way back in 1671). Played by Gérard Depardieu, Vatel is the chief steward at the mansion of the Prince de Condé, a now penniless French nobleman whose last-ditch effort is to invite King Louis XIV to his estate for the weekend, through a rager of a party, and win the king's favor in order to get the post as general in the upcoming war against the Dutch.

Troy Review

OK

For moviegoers anxious to see Brat Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Eric Bana oiled up and sweaty in various states of undress, Hollywood's handsome, aggrandized, $200-million-plus swords-and-sandals epic "Troy" has a lot to offer -- a whole lot to offer.

For those seeking a "Gladiator"-style, thinking-person's summer action movie, the film is on shakier ground -- and for folks more interested in watching the Trojan War of Homer's "Iliad" brought to life, brace yourselves for disappointment.

Screenwriter David Benioff ("25th Hour") takes many, many liberties with his source material, some of which are creative and shrewd, like using the mistaken-identity battlefield death of Achilles' look-alike cousin to imply how legends of the warrior's immortality spread in this version of the story which is devoid of gods, demigods and such mythology.
