Jude Law's promised return to the London stage has hit a glitch, nine months after the actor promised to tread the West End boards.

The ALFIE star revealed in September (04) he was in negotiations to star in a new production of William Shakespeare's HAMLET - his first turn in the West End since 2002, when he starred in DOCTOR FAUSTUS at the Young Vic theatre.

But the play is in trouble, and looks unlikely to go ahead.

Speaking at the first night of his fiancee Sienna Miller's new play AS YOU LIKE IT, Law says, "Let's say it's still in discussion. I don't want to get into it."

A spokesperson for the Young Vic - where Hamlet was expected to be performed - adds, "We haven't got any concrete plans to report."
