[Spoilers] Two scripts were written for the finale of the hit sitcom.
How I Met Your Mother fans who are angry at the way their favourite show ended after nine seasons may be able to finally see the ending they'd have preferred. The popular CBS sitcom aired its finale, hour-long episode last Monday (31st March) to some of its highest ratings but faced a backlash after upwards of 16,000 viewers signed a petition demanding for an alternate ending.
Furious 'HIMYM' Fans Have Ralled Against The Show's Creators After Finale Disappointment.
The show ended with a twist last week after the "Mother" turned out to be Robin (Cobie Smulders) instead of the character, played by Cristin Milioti, fans had been led to believe was the mother. The episode saw Ted Mosby played by Josh Radnor coming together with his longtime friend Robin Scherbatsky, despite Robin having married Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) in the penultimate episode.
"Rewrite and reshoot the HIMYM ending," the petition launched by a New York City-based viewer demand whilst fans adding their own comments to the cause shared their thoughts on the show. "The ending is non-sense and a disgusting joke," said one Daisy Tung, whilst Jascha Mai said "You completely betrayed us" and Jake Sammut wrote "THEY RUINED 9 YEARS OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN 40 MINUTES."

Now it has been revealed that the show's co-creator and executive producer, Carter Bays, had an alternate ending planned, i.e. two scripts with two different endings, out of which only one was shot. "Few days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series," he said to Ace Showbiz.
"We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too," he added. However, the alternate ending will not be shot and aired on television, rather will be featured in the special features section of the season nine DVD boxset when it is released.
