Great Expectations (1998) Review

Weak
You know, I didn't like the book Great Expectations when I was in high school, so I don't know why anyone thought it would be liked any better now. Hawke's meddling with the story is well-documented (including changing the main character's name from Pip to Finn). Then there's the updating to the 20th century, making Pip, er, Finn an artist (and a bad one at that), Bancroft's horrific drag-queenish dance instructor. De Niro's lost expression. Ugh. I'll take the book over this.

Billy Madison Review

Weak
Yet another forgettable and asinine entry into the Adam Sandler oeuvre, Billy Madison is ridiculous and stupid yet, ashamedly, made me laugh from time to time. The story involves a lazy rich kid who decides to repeat grades 1-12 to prove himself as worthy of taking over a major hotel chain (yeah, that'll prove it!) from his father. The gags are straight out of Sandler's usual box of toys. He spends most of the film doing his faux-castrato whine. Even the lunch lady makes an appearance. That doesn't mean you should make one too, though.

Jesus Christ Superstar Review

Good
I've never seen Jesus Christ Superstar or Godspell on stage, and while I appreciate the desire to spread the word of God via mass media (especially if it involves singing), I've just never been able to get into these overwrought productions (see also Hair), especially if they were made in the 1970s.

WhileSuperstar is a period piece set during the last weeks of Jesus's life, it also contains strange anachronisms like guns and cars -- designed to tell us, presumably, that Jesus's works are still relevant today. But it also misses the point on a lot of those lessons -- why, during his rampage against the money changers, is he destroying the stands of people selling glassware and vegetables? Thou shalt not eat greens? Hmmm.
