The Shop Around The Corner Review

Excellent
Very cute and clever love/hate story, set in 1930s Budapest (for some reason), about a pair of store employees who fall in love over a pen pal correspondence, but despise each other in real life. Funny and timeless. Jimmy Stewart is fantastic.

The Life Of Emile Zola Review

Excellent
Suprisingly strong period piece, this Oscar winner features Paul Muni as the celebrated French author and crusader Emile Zola, a man who, between writing government-bashing novels, found time to free a wrongfully convicted army officer from prison and exile -- even if he had to be convicted of libel in the process. Muni gets lost in his role and does some amazing work. The film is misleading -- the "life" of Zola is barely touched on; it's his final years and legal skirmishes that get all the screen time -- but that's a wise choice; this look at how screwed up the French legal system is can be harrowing.

The King Of Kings Review

Excellent
Fans of The Passion of the Christ will find The King of Kings a surprisingly familiar tale. Not just that it's about, you know, Jesus and all: Gibson lifted everything from Cecil B. DeMille's 1927 blockbuster, from casting a mega hottie as reformed prostitute Mary Magdalene (here she barely wears any clothes) to its over-the-top religiousness that steadfastly sets this film as an icon of the Christian faith.

Whether you're religious or not, King of Kings is a monumental technical achievement of its era. Most notable are its impressive cinematography, ghostly special effects which must have been shocking in its day, and the appearance of an early form of color in two of its scenes -- a "two-strip" Technicolor predecessor that remains one of few uses of color in a silent film.
