The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is heading for a $50 million plus opening at the U.S box office this week, and is set to overtake Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and nab the top spot.
Despite the fact it has been panned by critics and holds a dismal 20% 'Certified Rotten' on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the cinematic reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise looks like it's headed to the top of the U.S box office.
It'll be pizza and shakes all round at Paramount then
Projections estimate the Michael Bay-produced film will take over $50 million in its opening week, meaning it is on course to overtake current number one at box office, Guardians of the Galaxy, which shot to the top spot last week with an opening of $92 million and is still projected to take a healthy $40 million+ this week.
Whilst $50 million sounds like a lot, it's obviously a lot less than Guardians of the Galaxy took in its opening, but not only that- it's less than Transformers 4: Age of Extinction opened with too. The Transformers franchise has been Bay's pet project and he directed the latest film (which did not feature previous star Megan Fox, who appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) which took around $100 million in its opening week. The other big summer blockbuster sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, took just over $70 million in its first week.
However, despite not taking as much as other summer blockbusters, the film has still exceeded expectations, having only been projected to make between $40 and 45 million. The fact that the movie has done better than expected may lead to a sequel, although many critics will probably hope it doesn't.
