The A BOY NAMED SUE legend was at his wife's bedside when she passed away in Nashville yesterday (15MAY03), aged 73.
Cash married Carter in 1968 after he proposed to her onstage at a gig in Canada. Carter enjoyed a long career in country music, winning three Grammy awards and performing several duets with her husband.
ED BENSON, executive director of the Country Music Association, is one of many to have paid tribute to the late singer. He says, "People talk about Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette when it comes to pioneering women in country music. But they very seldom mention June, somewhat because she got married to Johnny Cash."
Carter's funeral will take place in the next week and will be a strictly private event.16/05/2003 17:04
