Director John Waters is thrilled gay cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain is up for eight Oscars, because it will change America's perception of gay relationships for the better.

The 59-year-old film-maker is convinced Ang Lee's film, which is nominated for awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, will have a deep impact on Middle America like no other movie focusing on homosexuality has.

He tells New York Daily News, "I liked the movie, but I also like that it's playing in Middle America, and it's probably the most gay-positive movie that they've ever had in that part of the country."
