Morning Glory Review

Very Good
A snappy script helps make this rather goofy comedy much more enjoyable than it should be. And it also helps that the film is extremely well-cast, and that it has some pointed things to say.

Becky (McAdams) is an ambitious young TV producer who has always dreamed of working for NBC's Today show. After being sacked from her job at a local New Jersey station, she finds work at low-rated network programme Daybreak. Sparky anchor Colleen (Keaton) gives Becky a run for her money in the energy stakes, and when Becky lands jaded veteran reporter Mike (Ford) as cohost, things start to get messy. Soon her boss (Goldblum) tells her that the show will be cancelled if ratings don't improve drastically. So Becky takes drastic action.

To Live And Die In L.A. Review

Good
Tough as nails cop drama has an on-the-edge cop (Petersen) doing anything he can to take down the counterfeiter (Dafoe) who killed his partner. Extremely bloody and gruesome, To Live and Die in L.A. shows exactly how painful it can be to get shot, butchered, and burned alive. In other words, there's a whole lot more dying than living going on here... Music by none other than Wang Chung.

The Secret Of My Success Review

OK
Brantley is Whitfield, Whitfield is Brantley!? Does the fun ever start? This Michael J. Fox romantic comedy about mistaken identity in big business is awfully stupid, but at least it's fun-stupid, not stupid-stupid. Slater is about as bad as they come as the office slut who slept her way to the top, but it's small roles from the likes of Pankow and Gwynne that make this 90 minutes bearable.

Monkey Shines Review

Weak
Talk about having a monkey on your back. This is pretty hideous, standard horror fare, with a genetically-enhanced monkey caring for a quadrapelegic. This is about as bad as horror gets (and at 1:54 in length, it's as long as it gets, too), but it does feature the only known man-bites-monkey-to-death scene on film that I can remember.

Talk Radio Review

Excellent
Two powder kegs of angry energy -- director Oliver Stone and actor/writer Eric Bogosian -- joined together in 1988 for this character study set during the late '80s media explosion, a combustible drama about a self-important talk radio host (Bogosian) on the road to disaster. With every ranting Bogosian monologue, with every listener phone call of derision or adoration, both actor and director keep their audience riveted. It's an impressive feat considering that the bulk of Talk Radio takes place in a single radio studio.

Bogosian is Barry Champlain, a brilliant loudmouth gab machine hosting a popular nightly talk show filled with his strong opinions and whack-job listeners. One fears her garbage disposal. One begs to visit Barry at the studio. And one (many?) offer the Jewish host death threats in the name of Nazism.
