An exhibition of John Lennon's art work has been launched in New York to celebrate what would have been his 64th birthday.

Titled WHEN I'M 64 - after the BEATLES song of the same name - the display features self-portraits, song lyrics, and caricatures of monsters put forward by his widow Yoko Ono.

The collection opened to the public on Saturday (09OCT04) and features the paintings and drawings Lennon created during his days as a student at England's Liverpool College of Art.

Ono says, "I don't think most people know John's artwork.

"Sketching was like John's security blanket. The guitar was as well. He was always strumming, but when he wasn't playing the guitar, he was drawing. Guitar and pen."
