Adoring fans of slain BEATLE John Lennon will head to Central Park's Strawberry Fields today (09OCT06) to celebrate what would have been the 66th birthday of the beloved rock legend in New York City. Lennon was shot to death across the street from the park, in front of his apartment building, on 8 December 1980. According to John Lennon Memorial Committee co-founder THOMAS LEIGHTON, "It's always spontaneous. The fans come on their own. They just gather." Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, planned to mark his birthday in Iceland by presiding at two events to further world peace. She will also award two $50,000 grants (GBP28,000) at a ceremony in Reykjavik. Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, 51, remains in prison in Attica, New York, serving 20 years to life. His next parole hearing is this month (OCT06).
