The folk icon and outspoken political activist died 17 years ago, but his legacy is still being recognized.
This weekend, folk icon John Denver was finally recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 17 years after his death in a plane crash, Denver (born Henry John Deutschendorf) was also honoured with an exhibit of his photographs -- Sweet Sweet Life: The Photographic Works of John Denver -- at Hollywood's Substrate Gallery. Denver made his name in the 60s, performing mainly on acoustic guitar. His music was typically lighthearted and optimistic.
Denver’s favourite subjects were the joy of nature, his love of music and relationships. In the 70s, as Denver developed an interest in activism, his music took on a more political tone, notably with the 1975 song Calypso, an ode to the exploration ship and team of environmental activist Jacques Cousteau. Denver was a close supporter of Jimmy Carter and the Democratic party in general.

17 years after his death, John Denver has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Denver was a US singer-songwriter, actor and activist. He was best known for penning and performing such songs as 'Country Roads, Take Me Home', 'Annie's Song' and 'Rocky Mountain High'. Popular throughout the 1970s and frequently in the charts, Denver appeared in numerous television shows both as an actor and in cameos. He was 53 when he died in a plane crash in 1997.
Denver was finally honoured on Friday (24th October) when he received a star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame has existed since 1958 and has more thousands of honourees. Denver's star will be the 2531st star on the Walk.

Beloved singer/songwriter John Denver is to be honoured posthumously with the 2,531st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The hitmaker's kids Zak Deutschendorf and Jesse Belle Denver will unveil the plaque in their father's honour on 24 October (14), while indie act Trampled By Turtles will perform a rendition of his tune Annie's Song.
Denver died in a plane crash on 12 October, 1997.
John Denver's brother is outraged after officials sold off the songwriter's land in Colorado.
The Rocky Mountain High hitmaker purchased 957 acres of wilderness in the 1970s to set up the Windstar Foundation, where he ran summer camps for kids and hosted symposiums on the environment.
After his death in 1997, funding for the organisation ran dry and last autumn (12) foundation board members quietly voted to sell the undeveloped property to a private corporation, Five Valley Farm, for $8.5 million (£5.5 million).

John Denver's songs are set to hit the Broadway stage as part of a new musical called A Moment in Time.
Actor Drake Bell and Lindsay Pierce were part of an 11-strong cast read through last week (ends21Oct11), and insiders claim the project will feature reworked versions of Denver's hits like Annie’s Song, Rocky Mountain High, and Take Me Home, Country Roads.
A Moment in Time follows the story of a mortally wounded marine in Afghanistan who recalls a happier time with his family in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The project was developed by five-time Tony Award winner Stewart F. Lane, who was recently honoured with the 2011 John Denver Spirit Award.

A campaign to name a peak in the Colorado Rockies after singer John Denver has been blocked by U.S. officials.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition to rename Mount Sopris in honour of late singer Denver, who wrote his hit 1972 track Rocky Mountain High while camping nearby.
However, the plan was rejected by officials at the U.S. board on Geographic Names, who insist it is federal policy to avoid adding new names to federal wilderness areas.
Denver was killed in a California plane crash in 1997.

The Ocean's Eleven producer, who was Denver's manager before he began working in film, details his rocky relationship with the late musician in forthcoming memoir, When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead.
Before the singer's death, Denver fired Weintraub, and claimed in their final fallout the mogul threw him out of his office and called him a "Nazi".
And Weintraub admits he still has deep regret about parting ways on bad terms, reports the National Enquirer.

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell will be joined by a support group of politicians as part of an exclusive climate change concert.
The Big Ask, a climate change campaign organised by Friends of the Earth, has played an integral role in convincing the government to commit to legally binding reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
But with emissions from aviation and shipping not currently included in the climate change bill, five MPs are abandoning partisan differences to play as Borrell's backing band at the June 3rd show.
Borrell is to play a one-off acoustic show in front of a commercial jet in the aviation room of London's Science Museum to highlight the importance of including aviation emissions in the climate change bill.
And supporting him on stage will be Conservative MP Anne Milton, Labour's Emily Thornberry and Ian Cawsey, Liberal Democrat Lembit Opik and the only MP to have played on Top Of The Pops, ex-Runrig band member Peter Wishart of the Scottish National party.
The five-piece - dubbed the Aviators for the occasion - will perform a rendition of John Denver's Leaving on a Jet Plane in a bid to encourage fellow MPs to vote to include aviation and shipping emission in the bill.
Mr Opik, no stranger to publicity himself, said that hundreds of constituents had contacted him Friends of the Earth's Big Ask campaign.
"I think it would be a great travesty to repay them with a law too weak to be compatible with stopping climate change," he added.
"All other sectors of the economy will have to play their part in the fight against climate change, and aviation should be no exception."
Borrell explained his involvement last week by saying: "I want to help make sure people know what's happening while there's still time to influence the law."
The Golden Touch star added: "The more people who get on board and email their MP at www.thebigask.com, the more chance we have of getting a sensible law."

Late country star John Denver's ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH was yesterday (12MAR07) named the second official anthem for the US state of Colorado, the singer's adopted home.
The song, which became a hit for the tragic musician in 1972, now stands alongside the original WHERE THE COLUMBINES GROW, which has been the state anthem since 1915.
Denver's brother RON DEUTSCHENDORF says, "He'd be very honoured. We are very proud. I am going to call my mom and tell her."
Denver died in October 1997 aged 53, when the aircraft he was piloting crashed off the coast of Pacific Grove, California.
