John Cusack's murder-mystery flick IDENTITY shot to the top of the American box office after raking in $17 million (GBP11.3 million) in its first weekend.

Jack Nicholson's Anger Management was pushed to second place after two weekends in the top spot. The comedy, also starring Adam Sandler, grossed $16 million (GBP10.6 million), pushing its 17-day total to $104.5 million (GBP69.6 million). The weekend's other new releases debuted weakly. Confidence, with Edward Burns and Dustin Hoffman, came in at fifth place with $4.75 million (GBP3.1 million).

Michael and KIRK DOUGLAS' IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY opened at number nine with just $3 million (GBP2 million), while The Real Cancun, a big-screen variation of MTV's The Real World, took in $2.3 million (GBP1.5 million) to finish in 10th place.
