'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Leads MTV Movie Awards Nominations

Mtv Movie Awards Star Wars Daisy Ridley John Boyega

Star Wars: The Force Awakens received the most nominations for this year’s Mtv Movie Awards, after being selected in a total of 11 categories ahead of next month’s ceremony in Los Angeles.

Having been snubbed in all five of its categories at the Oscars recently, with no recognition in any of the acting categories or for Best Picture, the slightly more irreverent and pop culture-oriented MTV Movie Awards may see the record-breaking film get better luck.

From Creed To Concussion: Culturally Diverse Suggestions For 2016 Oscar Nominations

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences John Boyega Michael B. Jordan

Academy Award sceptics are expecting another white-washed year, with diversity in Hollywood still not as broad as we need it to be. If you're one of the cynics, you'd be right to think that way, because even going through the ton of blockbusters seen in 2015, only a handful have any actors of colour.

We thought we'd throw a few of our own suggestions into the mix, ahead of the official announcement of this year's Oscar nominations. They're all deserving of a nod, so fingers crossed for each one of these:

John Boyega Star Wars Harrison Ford

What, would you imagine, would be the best thing about appearing in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' as a long-time fan of the franchise? Getting to wear those cool costumes? Visiting those incredible sets? Or being awarded the millions of dollars in box office sales and ultimate respect from fans forevermore? For John Boyega, the best thing was in fact getting to meet his life-long hero and now co-star Harrison Ford.

In a short featurette released ahead of the film's release in December 2015, we see Boyega giving Ford a huge hug before presenting him with a large Han Solo action figure, a broad grin spread across his face. It's not entirely clear whether Ford signed 'Harrison Ford' or 'Han Solo' on the front of the toy, but either way, Boyega looked immensely thrilled and totally lost for words, while co-star Daisy Ridley looked on, impressed.

John Boyega, one of the new young stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was one of the last people to see Damilola Taylor, the 10 year old schoolchild shockingly murdered on the streets of London by a gang in 2000, alive.

Damilola Taylor’s horrifying death made national headlines 15 years ago, and Taylor’s father has revealed that Boyega and his sister Grace would have been some of the last people to see his son alive, as they were very close as children.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has just missed out on setting the world record for a box-office opening by $7.9 million, according to early estimates. Although the film smashed records around the globe it’s $517m worldwide box office gross puts it second to Jurassic World’s $524.9m record, achieved earlier this year.

Star Wars Puts Ridley And Boyega In The Big Time

Daisy Ridley John Boyega Star Wars

Daisy Ridley has mainly appeared in TV series, while John Boyega won awards for his first film role in Attack the Block (2011). But of course all of that changes this weekend.

Both have spoken about the lengthy Star Wars audition process. "Luckily for me J.J. Abrams was searching as far and wide as possible to cast the role," says Ridley, who plays scavenger-turned-hero Rey. "I thought I'd ruined the first few auditions, but he saw some potential I guess and I was allowed to come back and read again. From when I started auditioning two years ago until now it has been like a rollercoaster."

John Boyega Says John Williams Music For His 'Star Wars' Character Is 'Pretty Darn Cool'

John Boyega

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is coming to the big screen for public viewing very soon. Fans are looking forward to seeing the incredible cast of old and new stars, the enormous sets that will no doubt be more awesome than ever before and the amazing journey these chracters are about to embark on. For John Boyega, however, one of the most underrated highlights of the movie is the music.

John BoyegaJohn Boyega was impressed by new John Williams score

Legendary composer John Williams returns to score the film, which is only fitting given that 'The Imperial March' is one of the most recognised film themes in the world. Boyega and his co-stars even got the chance to witness Williams recording the new score, which turns out to have been a mind-blowing experience.

John Boyega - Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens - Interview

An interview with John Boyega about Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Before landing the role of Finn in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens John Boyega was relatively unknown, he's appeared in Joe Cornish's Brit sci-fi comedy Attack The Block but most of his other work was TV based roles so as a lifelong fan of the movie franchise, this was one hell of a role for John to land. As well as obviously being ecstatic to work with JJ Abrams, John also explains how fantastic it was to be around Harrison Ford 24/7 as well as being able to explore the HUGE Millennium Falcon set.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Review

Essential

Appealing both to a new generation of viewers and fans of the series since the beginning, this 30-years-later sequel to 1983's Return of the Jedi is a thrilling adventure. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams has managed to capture the tone of the original trilogy while telling a story about young, vibrant new characters whose connection to the overall saga deepens intriguingly as events unfurl.

Over the past three decades, the Empire has regrouped, forming the First Order to crush the Old Republic for good. And the plucky Rebellion hasn't offered much resistance since leader Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) disappeared. The Empire's top henchman Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is searching for him just as diligently as the rebel leader General Leia (Carrie Fisher). But the real action is happening out of their grasp, as disaffected storm trooper Finn (John Boyega) teams up with rebel pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac) and then feisty scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) and expressive droid BB-8. Along the way, Han Solo and Chewbacca (Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew) find themselves back in the fray. And everyone is startled when there's a strong stirring in the force.

Abrams beautifully recreates the scruffy, clanky mechanical atmosphere of the original trilogy, infusing scenes with witty banter and John William's soaring score to throw us right back into that familiar galaxy. This includes the saga's main themes: the temptation of power, how true heroism is often accidental, and the tension between parents and children. Combine this with a plot that propels itself with a series of unexpected adventures and battles, all centred on the characters, and the film taps strongly into the teen in all of us.

John Boyega 'Couldn't Care Less' About Black Stormtrooper Criticism

Star Wars John Boyega

John Boyega is one of the newest members of the 'Star Wars' franchise and, in case you haven't been following the little promotional material that has already been released for 'The Force Awakens', he also happens to be one of the only black characters. Such recognition of diversity ought to be praised, but his involvement has sparked controversy among the prejudiced fans of the web since he appeared in the first trailer.

John BoyegaJohn Boyega stars as Finn in 'The Force Awakens'

However, the up and coming British star isn't letting such ridiculous internet trolling get to him. 'I'll be honest; I really don't care about the black Stormtrooper stuff', Boyega, who plays the character Finn in the movie, insists. 'I couldn't care less.' Instead, he's focusing more on the wider elements of the film, and the true meaning within the plot. 'This is a movie about human beings, about Wookies, about spaceships and TIE fighters and it has a message of courage and friendship and loyalty and I think that's something that's ultimately important.'

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director Jj Abrams stopped by ‘The Howard Stern Show’ on Monday to talk about the much anticipated sequel. Discussing those who have criticised the film for casting Boyega as a black stormtrooper, Abrams said: 'All I know is John Boyega is extraordinary in the new movie. I think the people who are complaining about that probably have bigger problems than there's a black stormtrooper.’

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens TV Spot Trailer

After the victory of the Rebel Alliance over the Galactic Empire and subsequent demolition of The Death Star, you'd imaging life in a certain galaxy would be a little more subdued, but as we soon learn, life for Princess Leia, Luke and Hans wasn't exactly easy following their small yet essential victory.

30 years on and to most citizens - humanoid and alien - the stories of evil Lord Darth Vader and the Jedi Masters are just a legend, a story they tell their children that starts with the well-known overture: 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away'. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh film in the Star Wars series and is an additional story to the original Star Wars outline.

The film follows a set of new characters as they join the battle and fight the evil forces once again threatening to destroy their galaxy. The Force Awakens was directed by Jj Abrams and sees a number of cast favourites return to the story including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

The REAL 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer Is Now Here [Trailer + Pictures]

It's finally here! The teaser trailer you've all been waiting for: 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', and while it's not really giving anything away, it looks pretty intense. Vehicles have updated, the stormtroopers are looking shinier and R2D2 appears to have evolved.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens LogoStar Wars returns in December 2015

Since George Lucas announced his retirement from the franchise, there's been all sorts of speculation about what differences could be expected from an updated sequel: though it's difficult to tell from the less than one and a half minute trailer. Everyone seems to be in a rush (especially, in a comical fashion, R2D2) and there's some brand new faces, who all look a little nervous as a voiceover booms out: 'There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.'

Very Good
Riveting performances hold our attention even when this dark drama starts wallowing in the messy lives of its central characters. But there are glimmers of hope along the way, and a terrifyingly realistic depiction of addiction.

Frank (Marsan) is a recovering drunk who can't cope with his past as a military officer. He has lost his wife and daughter as a result, but he's snapped out of his stupor when he meets snarky homeless teen Lynette (Reid) and helps her get back on her feet. Then she brings her drug-dealing boyfriend Danny (Sturridge) into his flat, and Frank's grip on reality starts to waver as he hits the bottle again. Meanwhile, a wealthy businesswoman (Garai) struggles to balance motherhood with her personal and professional lives.

Attack The Block Review

Good
First-time feature filmmaker Cornish invests plenty of energy and humour into this alien invasion thriller, apparently going for a Shaun of the Dead tone.

And while it's not that funny or coherent, it keeps us entertained.

On her way home in South London, trainee nurse Sam (Whittaker) is mugged by Moses (Boyega), who is then attacked by a small ape-like creature that has fallen from the sky. After killing it, Moses and his pals take it to the 19th floor flat of their drug dealer (Frost), who's working for the unstable mobster Hi-Hatz (Hunter). But things escalate from here, as an army of larger wolf-gorilla creatures with glowing teeth descend on the block. And Sam needs to team up with her tormenters and a local stoner (Treadaway) to fight them off.
