Gorky Park Review

OK
America's obsession with all things Soviet gave us this movie, the inevitable mystery set in the snow-shrouded, fur-hatted land of Russia (though actually shot in Helsinki). With William Hurt and Lee Marvin in the lead roles, it's hard to see how this film could go wrong, and yet it does, quite horribly. Joanna Pacula is wooden in her first movie appearance, as a Russkie ingenue who basically knows everything about why there are three bodies in a Moscow park with their faces ripped off, though she isn't talking to the cops (led by Hurt). Ultimately a mystery is revealed, and boy is it a doozy: it involves fur coats! If I ever have to hear the phrase "the sables" again I think I'll shoot myself. Hopelessly dated and morose -- and much is lost from the bestselling novel.

The definitive populist telling of the Wyatt Earp story, Tombstone has more fun with the story than traditionalist versions like Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp, with a younger, more crowd-pleasing cast -- Thomas Haden Church plays a bad guy; Jason Priestley is a deputy. And it's got more factual holes than the Clanton gang ended up with -- all in the name of serving up Good Clean Fun.

Virus Review

Terrible

Computer builds half-man/half-machines out of spare parts, a la Star Trek's Borg. Or how stupid can a movie actually be? Witness Donald Sutherland's ridiculous accent. And what is Donnie's job? He's piloting a tugboat which is towing a giant barge across the ocean! If Virus wasn't so ridiculously awful it would be funny. As it is, it's derivative, boring, and stupid -- and it vies for one of the worst films of the year. Need I include the disclaimer, "Based on a comic book..."
